Philosophy

Year-round field hockey opportunities are available for area youth to try field hockey. Programs are brief in duration (1 hour), number of weeks (6-8), and times per week (1). This allows kids to experience field hockey while continuing with their other activities.

Youth programs are open to girls in Kindergarten through 6th grades. Participants are grouped appropriately by age/size and skill.  Our programs center around kids having fun while they learn great skills like hand-eye coordination, agility, finesse, balance, passing, offense, defense, and teamwork.

At the beginning level (Kindergarten through 2nd grades), our youth programs are strictly developmental in nature with emphasis on developing and perfecting basic stick skills as well as attention to avoiding the development of bad habits.  Time is also allocated to small-sided games so participants can use their skills in a game setting.

At the upper elementary level (3rd through 6th grades), programs are still considered developmental and participants continue to work on their stick skills in mini-clinics but more emphasis is placed on playing time. Participants are placed on teams and play games as they are accustomed with other team sports.

The coaching staff consists of knowledgeable and experienced field hockey coaches and players who are excited to teach and coach the sport to children.  Everyone involved in coaching or running our youth programs has played field hockey at the high school or college level.  Some coaches are accredited with USA Field Hockey.  Each program has a head coach in charge of program curriculum and on-site coaching.  This enables us to control the quality of instruction as well as ensure that the kids have a positive experience with the coaches involved.

Pine-Richland Youth Field Hockey programs are offered through a partnership between Pine-Richland Field Hockey and the Pine-Richland Youth Center.
